Arad Fort is one of Bahrain’s most important fortified castles which overlooks various sea passages of Muharraq’s shallow seashores. It was built in the style of Islamic forts at the end of the 15th and early 16th centuries. Arad Fort was used as a defensive fortress throughout history, from the time Bahrain was occupied by the Portuguese in the 16th century to the reign of Shaikh Salman Bin Ahmed Al-Khalifa in the 19th century.

RIFFA FORT

Shaikh Salman bin Ahmed Al Fateh Fort, commonly known as Riffa Fort due to its location, was built by Shaikh Ahmed Al Fateh on the ruins of an old fort in 1812. The fort was later converted into a residence and then became the government’s office in 1869. Since the seventies of the last century, it has become an important historical site.

Bahrain Fort or “Qal’at al-Bahrain” is built over 180,000 sq.ft. Occupation of the fort has been recorded from 2300BC to the 16th Century. This site was the capital of the Dilmun, one of the most important ancient civilizations of the region. Bahrain Fort is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site Bahrain Fort Museum is located along the northern waterfront of the Fort. With 500 artefacts showcased, the long settlement history of the site is evoked to the unique backdrop of the wall, which recreates the different archaeological layers uncovered at the site;

BEIT AL QURAN

Housed in a building spectacularly engraved with Arabic script, Beit al Quran (House of Quran) showcases a fascinating collection of Quranic manuscripts as well as a library of over 50,000 books written in Arabic, English, and French that center mostly on Islam. Manuscripts dating back to the 7th century as well as Qurans written on parchment, rice, peas, and grains are among the impressive collection. It is claimed to be the only institute in the world devoted to the Quran.

BU MAHER FORT

The Bu Maher Fort Visitor’s Center can be accessed via the sea by boats that depart from Bahrain’s National Museum harbor. This is the starting point to discovering more about the Pearling Path that has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The center contains a three-dimensional display that guides the viewer though the history of the path and the houses which formed it from the early beginnings to the main pearling traders. Bu Maher Fort, which was built in 1840, is steeped in seafaring and pearling history and forms the first stop in the historical pearling path having once served as the main fishing harbor and gateway to and from the sea.

BARBAR TEMPLE

The Barbar Temple complex, located at Barbar, consists of three Dilmun-era temples that were built atop one another. The first dates to around 3000 BC, while the second was added 500 years later, and the third between 2100 BC and 2000 BC. They are believed to have been constructed to worship the god Enki, the god of wisdom and freshwater.

Here you can purchase a variety of local goods from natural pearls to spices. Make sure you taste the delicious Bahraini Halwa at one of the authentic sweet shops in the Muharraq souq. AL-JASRA HOUSE
